“Tencent is always plagiarizing, but never get a lawsuit.”(Unknow, 2010)

Here is a video create by a Youtuber, and she covered some unethical actions Tencent did on its early years as well:Tencent: One of the Shadiest Gaming Tech Giants

Most of the comments from bloggers and editorialist about Tencent are critical, especially the comments from other game developer and coding programmer. “Although Tencent has become one of the biggest IT companies and doing all kinds of business in all field, the way it defeats its competitors is still called plagiarism” (Bo, 2010). In 2003, Lianzhong Game platform’s develop noticed Tencent launched a “twin” game platform which is very similar to Lianzhong. The CEO of Lianzhong, Mr. Bao realized the threaten, however, instead of sending Tencent a lawsuit, he was trying to negotiate with the current manager in Tencent and ask for collaboration. However, Bao’s kindness does not turn in to good outcome, the current chief officer of Tencent refuse to meet Bao. “Unlike other massively online game, the rule of online chess and card games are fixed, which the code is not complicated enough. Also the most of the players are also QQ users, therefore, my platform is very easy to be copy and plagiarism by big company such as Tencent”, said by Bao (Xu, 2010).

This is the cover of China Computer world Journal, Volumn 28, the Penguin on here is the icon of QQ, which is an social and communication aplication's icon developed by Tencent

There are also other comments on Tencent’s other unethical actions, the leak of user’s information. Since the most featured function of WeChat is WeChat pay,  in China, the most commonly used payment method are WeChat Pay and Alipay(Developed by Alibaba), in other word, WeChat Pay and AliPay has oligopoly and evenly split the China online convenient payment market share, since we can hardly find the store which will accept other online payment include PayPal, Apple pay or Samsung pay. Since in order to make a successful payment or transaction, WeChat required user to input password or scan face, and nowadays, people with the phone has the face recognize function will setting the verification via face scanning. However, based on the report, Tencent will not protect the face photos scanned through the phone, instead, Tencent will provide this information to the police in some cases (Cook, 2019), without inform the user of this action. Since there is a lack conscious of protect the private information, so this unethical action has not been judged by a lot of media in domestic.

My option on Tencent bullying and plagiarism other small companies is the higher level must involve with the software application developing decision, since every successful big company with huge market share cannot operate without the control of the higher level. However, since when the management team receive the approval from the development team that involved other companies design idea, the only reason they did not deny the approval is they see the profit behind this action.

  1. Why didn't Mr. Bao sue Tencent after the company refused to negotiate with him? Is Tencent rich enough to quiet it's competitors? Also, did Tencent leak other information of it's users besides photos? I am a little confused about that.

    1. I think there are two reasons Mr. Bao did not sue Tencent: first, by 2003, Tencent already have huge amount of user in using its messenger QQ, but Mr. Bao only had a platform can play mini games by that time, therefore, when Tencent launched QQ game, there were user outflow from Bo's platform to QQ game. Second, the fee of hiring a lawyer is expensive in 2003, for the startup companies this expense is unaffordable.
By 2003, Tencent's QQ is the only online chat software we had, therefore, my guess is Tencent held more market share back to 2003 than nowadays, so yes, Tencent was too rich back to 2003 to fight with.
WeChat is also leak the chat content of its users to police, due to some sensitive topic contended.

  2. Quick question for you. If you were an employee of Tencent and had knowledge about their plagiarizing techniques, would you be a whistleblower? I find it very unjust for a company to continue manipulating these small companies of their rights and discrediting them. If it was me, I would try to suggest a more ethical way before I part ways from the company.

    1. If I were an employee of Tencent, I will suggest the management to make the ethical choice. However, in reality, I will not work for a company without moral standing or bottomline.

  3. The only thing I can't wrap my head around is the fact that employees wouldn't take the opportunity to report this issue. The majority of the time companies with a bigger abundance of money tend to cut out any competitors they have to go against. Also, do you think that companies like Tencent should be taken out of the industry? In my personal opinion, I would try to eliminate any companies that use money as a way of manipulating smaller companies.
